Happy 18th Birthday (Altenew/Stampin’ Up!)

by Kylie

Hi Everyone, a couple of weeks ago I was surprised to receive a message from the mother of a friend of mine asking me to make a birthday card. Her Granddaughter was about to turn 18! Whilst I make my work cards every year, I had never been asked to make a card for someone else. I asked for a few details about her requirements and was told she likes the colour purple, cats, and had just bought a car. She suggested that it have a particular phrase and that maybe, it could have a pop up on the inside. With that guidance, I sat down to create and that is when I realised that all of those things didn’t really go together. I decided to make a couple of cards which focussed on different things from the list provided and the Grandma could choose the one she liked the best.

For the first card, I decided to make it more elegant with a lovely sentiment across the front panel. The Altenew Painted Butterflies (whilst being neither cats nor cars) seemed like they would be a sweet addition. I stamped the images using Lawn Fawn ink and I think they came up well. Once I was finished stamping, I smooshed the lightest ink onto an acrylic block, then added some water. I then flicked this inky water over the card. Finally, I added some purple rhinestones from Kaiser Craft and I think it finished off the card beautifully. I don’t always add a lot of decoration to the inside of the card (sometimes just a panel of cardstock) but since this was a special occasion, I decided to continue the theme inside.

Here’s the card…

For the second card, I decided to go for a more playful design – with a pop up in the middle, as had been suggested. I created the inside first using a die I had purchased from Stampin’ Up! – Love this die! So fun! (And you can use the letters which pop out on another project). As the inside was the “main event”, so to speak, I thought the front of the card should be a little more subdued. It did need to have a big hit of gold though because who doesn’t love some gold bling!

Can you guess which card the Grandma chose?

Actually, it was neither. I sent her a picture of them both and she asked me to make the first card again but this time include the Granddaughter’s name on the front. Sadly I do not have a picture of this card. I had to space it a little differently to fit the name in but it otherwise looks very close to the first image. I believe both Grandma and Granddaughter liked the finished product.

Thanks for stopping by today! I hope you are having a great day!

Happy Stamping!

Now, me?, I would have chosen the second card. I love that pop-up on the inside, and so would all of my granddaughters, regardless of age! Don’t get me wrong, that first card is lovely and amazing, and with her name on it, I sure it was a huge hit, because it’s beautiful, but I can see the huge smiles on faces, and squeals of delight from the voices of the ten granddaughters in my family. Know what?…I think you should make a video of your second card, and post it here, on FB, and IG. And I’m being serious, too!! I’m sure it would spread like wildfire, and all of blogland would be clamoring to CASE it. Heck, I’m already trying to figure out exactly how you did it! Make another and enter it into a bunch of challenges, girl! Can you just move in with me so we can craft together all day long???!!! I’d love that! Sending hugs your way and email me so we can set up some FT! : )

Thanks, friend! 🙂 I liked both. I wouldn’t have known which to choose. I didn’t love the front of the pop-up card but I didn’t want it too busy since it had a lot going on on inside. It is a die – nothing fancy. The die did all the work. If I could work out how to get good lighting…and more hours in the day, I’d LOVE to start making videos. Would totally love to spend all day crafting. haha
